Three Verses to Get You Through Your Workday

Whether you’re working the old 9 to 5 or 7 to 7, staying at home, working from home or any combination thereof, work is inevitable.

I have had jobs that were quite enjoyable, and I’ve had jobs that I loathed, where walking out the door at the end of the day felt like a release from prison.

But whether I have loved my jobs or despised them, there are several verses I've turned to for praise, encouragement and strength. Here are three of my favorites:

Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

A common verse, but a great reminder. When we focus on doing our best work, regardless of the circumstances, we have no choice but to change our perspective. Is your coworker telling you for the thousandth time about the winning 3 pointer he sank 30 years ago in Junior High? Ask God how your listening matters and love your neighbor. Is your boss taking credit for your team's work? Ask God how you can lift up your team. Lord, help me to forget all the negativity that surrounds me and to seek you first in all my work circumstances.

Psalm 143:10

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; your spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

This verse reminds me that I should always be in learning mode. It humbles me and reminds me to listen for the lessons that surround me. This verse tells me not to be a student of my own will, but of his; to hear HIS voice in his word, and not my own.

This verse commands that I remove my propensity to take charge and that I should ask God to correct me when I think I know best and move forward too quickly on decisions without seeking his wisdom and guidance. Teach me, Oh Lord how to be a follower.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

Let’s face it, we’re going to screw up every now and then. A bad review, a calculation error, a failed project. Sometimes we’re “on” and sometimes we’re not even plugged in. But WE’RE NOT DONE TIL HE SAYS WE’RE DONE. And that is the day of Jesus. We continue to be a good work, in Jesus, if we remain receptive to his teachings and not fall into Satan’s lies of despair.

Not one or a series of mistakes can separate us from the work that God has in store for us through his Son. We can joke about being a hot mess or sink into sadness with each mistake we make, or we can rest and be still in his presence and let God continue his good work in us.

Bottom line, whether we are on top of the world or dragging through the bottoms, we must ask ourselves, Are we bringing Glory to God through our work? Are we working to please man or Him? What do you think?
