12 Verses Young Adults Need as We Shove Them From the Nest
When we first brought home our oldest, in all his 6 lb, 4 oz. glory, all snuggled up in his cozies and nestled in his carrier, we placed him on the living room floor and said, "now what?"
He slept. And slept. Our black lab came and gave him a big "hello" lick and he still didn't wake. My husband and I celebrated with a high five and collapsed on the couch, basking in our Rockstar parenting.
My soul hasn't been quiet since that first moment.
Now, eighteen years later, I am quite bursting at the seams to see him off to college. Not because I don't love the kid or cherish every moment with him, but it's just … time. He's ready and I'm starting to feel like I'm
holding him back rather than helping him grow. And while I've failed in so many areas that have become abundantly clear this past week (don't ask - won't be able to blog about it for months), he has also shown extraordinary kindness, determination and gentleness.
I have enjoyed all of the, "Mom, how do I - " questions, but I am also anxious to see how he will figure life out once I've shoved him from the nest. I am so very thankful to his small group leaders, neighbors, friends, grandparents, cousins and aunts and uncles who have invested their time and resources in helping to raise this fine young man. I am thankful he is equipped with the wisdom of heaven to make as few mistakes as possible (yeah right) or to understand that when he does, his savior is waiting with open arms to hear all about it.
Here are a few of the verses I will leave my son with when he sets off for college:
When you need confidence
Psalm 16:7-11 I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, my glory rejoices; my flesh also will rest in hope. For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will you allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Deuteronomy 31:8 And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. he will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.
1 John 4:13-15 By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us His spirit. And we have seen and testify that the father has sent the son as a Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the son of God, God abides in him and he in God.
When you need strength
Isaiah 40: 29-31 He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might he increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, BUT those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Psalm 118:6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
When Everyone Else Seems to run astray
Proverbs 23:17 -18 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day; for surely there is a hereafter and your hope will not be cut off.
when you need forgiveness (and you will)
James 5:15b - 16 And if he has committee sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed.
when you need patience
Psalm 27:14 Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!
when you want to praise Him and give thanks
Psalm 118:24 This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:29 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! For His mercy endures forever.
Psalm 100:4-5 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.
when you feel lonely and a bit homesick
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. he will not leave you nor forsake you."
Oh how the list could go on. All his life, he has been prayed over, prayed with, prayed about, taught, lectured, shown and demonstrated himself, all the Jesus love we and others could muster.
Whether your child heads toward the military, college, the workforce or decides to stay at home for a while, I pray this list gives them comfort and hope.
As I look back over the list, I have to ask, was it for him or me?
