Devotion

As I dive through my work in progress, Beneath the Surface, A Devotional Journal for Introverted Believers, I zero in my prayers on the word DEVOTION as I worship this Ash Wednesday in preparation for Easter.

Beneath the Surface is not a self-help book or a guide to better living. I pray earnestly that through the devotions - to God, not self - and the meditative journaling that accompanies them, introverts will recognize their awkwardness as strength, using it for the glory of God.

With Lent upon us, I've been praying how I can dedicate myself to the devotion of God in a sacrificial and praiseworthy way. Do I spend more time in solitude? Do I choose to fast from social media? Will I sacrifice food, pleasures, time, or money?

Do any of these put the focus on me rather than Him? Is there any true selfless act of devotion when even the purest of devotional intentions brings joy, peace and love?

Ash Wednesday is a day of prayer, repentance, and fasting.

Of Prayer - James 5:15 "And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."

Of Repentance - Luke 13:3 "I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."

Of Fasting - Joel 2:12 “Now, therefore,” says the Lord,“Turn to Me with all your heart,With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”

Christians all over the world celebrate this day as the beginning of Lent. I love seeing them set aside personal gain for His. And whether you celebrate it in corporate worship, through individual devotion time, or both, "Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen." Hebrews 13:20-21

If you subscribe this week, you will receive a free printable to accompany this week's blog that will help you meditate on these questions:

How will you recognize Lent? How will your prayers be directed? What will repentance look like for you? Are you fasting from food or social media or your favorite TV show? What are you doing in its place that brings glory and honor to God?
